It’s shooting brake season, people. Porsche has green-lighted the Panamera shooting brake concept, we’ll soon be driving Ferrari’s restyled GTC4Lusso, and Toyota’s Australian division is now taunting us with this 86 Shooting Brake Concept, a wagon version of the former Scion FR-S. And, unlike other rear-wheel-drive wagons we occasionally dream about, it’s a fully realized concept, not a rendering.

As the future of the flat-four Toyota/Subaru coupes remains cloudy past the current generation, there are no production plans for an 86 hatch. For now.

“While we never say never, and I would love this concept to become a production reality, it is very much a concept that demonstrates the passion within Toyota for cars that are fun to drive,” said 86 chief engineer Tetsuya Tada.

On a visit to Australia in November 2014—one year after Subaru unveiled its own BRZ shooting brake concept in Tokyo—Tada saw his team’s quarter-scale clay model and decided to have a go with it. Toyota says it only changed the roof and rear quarters (in the photos it sure looks like overall dimensions haven’t increased an inch). Of course we love every curve of the 86 Shooting Brake—among hatches with impossible sight lines, this Toyota is more extreme than the Range Rover Evoque.

What say you? Do you like it enough to put your cash forward? Could it revive interest in the production cars? Tada-san is listening.
