Wagon Lust: Jaguar May Do an XF Wagon, Including an SVR Version

-Jaguar’s lead designer, Ian Callum, is a man of impeccable taste, so naturally he’s a station wagon enthusiast. Last month, he ruled out the possibility of a wagon version of the compact XE sedan, but he left the door open for more long-roof Jaguars. Even though the wagon market is faltering somewhat, Jaguar might build a new version of the XF Sportbrake (pictured above), and let its SVR division make a super-hot version.

-

UK publication Auto Express reports that the XF Sportbrake is planned for a potential debut this year at the Frankfurt motor show this fall, and an SVR version will follow at some point afterward. Like the last XF Sportbrake, the new one is highly unlikely to reach the U.S., but at least we’ll likely have a 550-horse F-Pace to play with.

-

In an interview with Auto Express Callum set the record straight about an erroneous report that said Jaguar was done with wagons entirely and dropped some strong hints about the XF Sportbrake.

-
-

“I was misquoted saying we’d never build another wagon,” Callum told us. “I was asked if we’d ever build an XE wagon – and we won’t.” When asked about an XF estate, he added: “That would be a very pretty car.” “I’m a wagon fan. And there’s a sense of obligation that once you’ve started a range, you need to continue for your customers and hope to grow with it.”

-

Without saying anything definitive, Callum essentially confirmed an XF Sportbrake is coming. As far as an SVR-tuned wagon, you could expect it to have the same supercharged V-8 used in the F-Type, and all-wheel drive. The F-Type SVR has a 575-horse version of that engine and sounds thoroughly ridiculous.

Even if Jaguar doesn’t bring it to the U.S., we’ll just be happy it exists. The world needs more V-8 megawagons.
