Le Mans, Le Go: Ford to Display GT Race Car Made from 40,000 Bricks

LEGO Ford GT Race Car Goes on Display in Le MansWhat has four wheels and also flies—or gets flown or otherwise transported—to the Circuit de la Sarthe, location of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, to celebrate the return of the Ford GT to the legendary race? One spectacular 1/3-scale model of the GT race car rendered completely from Lego.

Built by a professional Lego model-builder named Pascal, this Ford GT weighs between 66 and 88 pounds, according to Pascal, and consists of some 40,000 Lego bricks of different sizes, shapes, and colors. It will be displayed alongside a super-size model of a classic Ford GT40 when the real race car makes its triumphant return to Le Mans a half century after the first of the original GT’s Le Mans wins in 1966. (Hence the No. 66 on the car’s side.)

Once a computer model was designed, it took three weeks to build, starting with the wheels, which Pascal says he constructed free-hand. Construction of the body then started from the base up to the top. “The form of the car is very strange but very exciting,” said Pascal. “It’s a very aggressive look.”

The hardest parts, said Pascal, were the stickers and logos, because there are so many different colors and such. Still, we’d happily deal with that pain to have the chance to work on such an epic build.
