Last year the Maserati Alfieri sports car was on our list of “25 Cars Worth Waiting For,” and now it looks like we’ll have to wait a bit longer. A new report from Australia’s Motoring suggests that the production Alfieri won’t arrive as soon as we thought, contradicting the future product plans that Maserati laid out in 2014.
-Those plans called for the Alfieri coupe to arrive in 2015, with a convertible to follow a year later. Obviously we’ve already missed that mark, and we’ve seen no indication that a production version of the knockout Alfieri concept—first shown almost exactly two years ago at the 2014 Geneva auto show—is coming anytime soon.
- -In fact, Maserati CEO Harald Wester told Motoring that the next new Maserati would be the replacement for the GranTurismo coupe and convertible. The previous plan called for the new GranTurismo coupe to debut in 2018, after the Alfieri coupe and convertible. We hope that Wester means that the GranTurismo’s timeline is being pushed up, because we certainly don’t want to wait until after 2018 to see the gorgeous Alfieri hit the scene. Or, it could be that the Alfieri effectively will replace the GranTurismo and that Maserati will have just one sports GT going forward.

Whatever delays are going on behind the scenes, the changes to the product plan appear to derail Maserati’s goal of offering six distinct new models in its lineup by 2018. The recently revealed Levante SUV gets the Italian automaker up to three, along with the Ghibli and Quattroporte sedans. Mostly, though, we just want the gorgeous Alfieri to get here, already.
